HEAT submissions
HEAT, Giramondo’s literary magazine, welcomes submissions of fiction, essays, interviews, hybrid forms and translated works.
Our intention is to publish the best work being written in Australia and internationally, gathering innovative literary perspectives across borders. HEAT is published five times a year in a slim, intimate format, that throws sharp focus on the work of the featured authors.
Writers looking to submit to HEAT should familiarise themselves with prior issues of the magazine and consider subscribing.
Please know, we do not publish reviews or opinion pieces, at least in the conventional sense. We are, however, interested in writing that engages with other writers and their works. We’re also intrigued by obsessions and curiosities, lost or secret histories, literary quests and writing that brings research to life. We encourage writing which gives full rein to the author’s voice, without the restriction of a word limit.
Unfortunately, we are unable to accept material that has appeared elsewhere in the English language.
HEAT is closed to poetry submissions at this time.
Write the Day
Inspired by a long passage in The Golden Notebook by Doris Lessing, and by the great diarists of literature, Write the Day invites writers to document a single day in their lives, from waking to sleeping, capturing as faithfully as possible all that passes through their minds and senses. This online-only series was launched in April 2026. If you would like to submit your own Write the Day for consideration, please select this category on the form under ‘genre’. Your account can be as long or as short as you like, and if accepted will be published on the HEAT website and sent out in our newsletter.
